A Message from the Manufacturer

The following is a communication from Joe at the Legacy yard in Florida.

Since her introduction almost a quarter of a century ago, our Legacy trawlers have won the admiration of the cruising community and professional mariners whose suggestions have contributed to her continued evolution. Today, the 2009 model Legacy trawlers represent the most recent refinements to our proven classic voyager. We constructed new hull and deck molds to incorporate features our owners were asking for. Some of these features include a larger forward stateroom with the opportunity to have a separate head and shower. Her raised sheer line has been brought further aft for an even dryer deck in heavy weather and at the same time increased the interior volume. The most significant change we made for the new model year is that Legacy trawlers are not only available with our economical full displacement hull, but for the first time they are also offered with our new semi-displacement hull form for owners that require a higher performance vessel. The high efficiency of the full displacement hull form continues with the addition of additional hull refinements and an increased aperture to permit a larger propeller. The Yanmar 54HP diesel is standard as are stabilizing bilge keels. The new semi-displacement hull adds approximately 2 feet to her hull and also has an integrated swim platform. She is available with diesel propulsion from 100 to 350HP. Both hull designs share the same deck components and all of our models are available in either full or semi-displacement configurations. Another feature that we have incorporated in our new hull and deck molds is the flexibility of owners to choose the traditional Teak wood exterior trim appointments or the total absence of exterior wood for reduced maintenance.
I have attached information describing our new fleet of Legacy Trawlers. Because of file sizes, we have transmitted this information through separate emails. We currently have three Legacy Trawlers under construction at our Largo, Florida facility. A model 323 is nearing completion and utilizes a unique Diesel-Electric propulsion system. She promises to be very green, very economical to operate and very quiet. We also have two semi-displacement models under construction; a model 321 and 326. We will share photos of these new models with you as they progress. We also build a line of planing recreational and sport fishing boats powerboats in sizes from 13' to 37'.

Pictures of Mark II and Mark III

Conrad Nay found these two photos of other Legacy 32s on the internet and sent them to me. The Naruji is a sister ship of my Popeye, a Mark III aft cabin model. The other photo is a Mark II aft cockpit model, I think. Note that the Mark II is a widebody design without walk around decks. Probably pretty roomy but not as much to my taste.

New Information on Legacy models

Conrad Nay of Calgary, Alberta saw this website and offered some information which he got in 1998 when at a boat show in Vancouver BC. In 22 pages it shows all of the models of the Legacy including 2 styles I knew nothing about. It is a 6.5 MB file pdf file and I am not sure how such a thing attaches. Maybe it doesn't. I will try to add it and see how it works. If that fails, you can always contact me and I can email it to you.

Kids Ride on Popeye



Yesterday, I took my two daughters and two grandkids for their first ride on Popeye. For the grandkids, it was their first boat ride ever. Meg, our 4 year old, was quite hesitant about getting aboard but had fun once inside. (She saw a round orange float and thought someone had lost their ball.) Jamie, the 2 year old, was comfortable right off. In normal two year old fashion, he trashed the galley, no small feat since it is basically empty still. Both were excited to wear the new life jackets but that wore off just about as quickly as you would guess.

A Sunny Day for a Maiden Oregon Voyage



At long last, Popeye is legally on the water on a maiden voyage. With my wife and friends from France (and with the documentation papers that the Coast Guard speedily provided in only 4 1/2 months finally in hand) we took advantage of the beautiful weather (also long in coming) and went up the Willamette to the St. Johns Bridge. The little 28 horse and the new prop gave us about 5.7 knots at 3000 rpm. There are still many things to learn and leaks to track down and outfitting to do. But it was nice to have a ride.

For those of you interested in electronics, I have included a picture of the new installation of the engine instruments and the new chart plotter.

Legacy 32 Mark II and Mark III Models

The drawings below show 4 models of the Legacy 32. They were provided by Leo Smith of Washington (the State) who is having a Mark II Model 321 - the aft cockpit model - built currently. The one floor plan you see is for his boat.

As you can see the Mark II has more house than the Mark III and both come with the option of an aft cabin or an aft cockpit. At this point, I have no idea what a Mark I would look like, if such a thing exists. Popeye is a Mark III aft cabin model.

Family Visits Popeye

Back in January, we took a trip out to the marina to visit Popeye. Granddaughter Meg and grandson Jamie had never been on a boat before, but knew that they had to have life jackets on before they got anywhere near the water. In the end, Jamie never got up in the boat, but Meg, Kelly, Nick, and Wendy all got tours.

It's not as wonderful as being on a boat in the water, but any time on a boat is a good thing.

A not successful day

Not much to add today. Went to the boat with the intention of doing a general cleaning and to make sure that everything works -- does the refer chill, does each light light, etc. But I had not brought the keys. By the time I drove all the way home it made no sense to go back. I will probably go back tomorrow and try again.

The other thing I want to correct is that I have drawings of a Mark III aft cabin like mine, a Mark III aft cockpit, and the same two version of the Mark II. It is the Mark I that I do not have drawings for. If anyone has such and would share, let me know.

The Boat

The reason for this blog is not so much to express myself as to create a spot where information about my new (to me) boat can be presented. The Legacy 32 is a little known boat manufactured at a small boatyard in Clearwater Florida. If any production boat has a smaller internet foot print, I don't know it. There are at least two other boat companies with the Legacy brand name and you find them on the internet. But seldom my boat or her sisters. So this blog is to change that, in a small way.

The Legacy 32s have been made at least since 1990. Mine was started then and launched in March of 1991. The hull is 32 feet overall length, 10 foot beam, about 3.5 feet of draft and 26 feet at the waterline. The displacement is rated at 14,000 pounds. She carries 110 gallons of diesel in two tanks and the same amount of water. The engines have varied from the low 30 horsepower to half again that. My boat is repowered with a 28 horsepower Beta (Kubota) engine, perhaps a bit small for the hull. I have not had the opportunity to find out yet.

There are at least three models, although I have only found the layout for two. Mine is a Mark III, which has the pilot house located aft. Within the Mark III model, I have seen drawings for an aft stateroom model (mine) and an aft cockpit model. The Mark I drawings I have show a forward pilot house and a raised salon aft, very much like many traditional trawlers. I have not seen information on a Mark II. As soon as I learn how to post pictures, I will -- well, post pictures.
